해금은 몽골 지역의 유목민족인 "해부루 족"(해족)이 사용한 악기라 하여 "해금"이라고 한다. 이 악기는 중국에 유입되어 경극 반주에 쓰는 악기인 경호(京胡)로 사용되었다. 이후 한 옥타브가 낮은 음역대로 개량되면서 호금의 일종인 얼후(이호/二胡/南胡)라는 명칭으로 사용된다. 우리나라에 유입된 시기는 고려 예종 11년(1116년)으로 해금이라는 이름으로 사용되었으며 원형과 가장 비슷한 악기로 알려져 있다.

The haegeum is a traditional Korean string instrument, resembling a fiddle. It is popularly known as kkangkkangi.It has a rodlike neck, a hollow wooden soundbox, and two silk strings, and is held vertically on the knee of the performer and played with a bow.

The haegeum is one of the most widely used instruments in Korean music. The haegeum is used in court music as well asmadangnori (ordinary people's music). The haegeum's range of expression is various despite having only two strings, with sounds ranging from sorrowful and sad to humorous. The haegeum is made using eight materials: gold, rock, thread, bamboo, gourd, soil, leather, and wood, and so it is called paleum (eight sounds).
